Image Requirements for Garment Printing – What You Need to Know

Why Quality Matters
Printing on garments is very different from displaying an image on a screen.

Poor-quality images
can lead to blurry, pixelated prints and unwanted backgrounds.

Here’s why:
• Low-resolution images look blurry and pixelated when enlarged.
• High-resolution (300 DPI) ensures sharp, clear prints.
• Backgrounds in images can print as unwanted boxes unless removed.
• Colours may shift if the image isn’t prepared in the correct color mode (RGB or CMYK).
• Small images cannot be scaled up without losing quality.

Image Requirements Checklist
• Preferred file types: Vector (.AI, .EPS, .SVG) or high-resolution raster (.PNG with transparency,
.PSD, .TIFF).
• Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI at actual print size.
• Colour mode: CMYK for printing.
• Transparent background for designs without a box.
• Convert fonts to outlines or embed them in the file.

Common Mistakes & Why They’re a Problem
• Using screenshots or social media images – these are low resolution and compressed.
• Submitting images with solid backgrounds when transparency is needed.
• Providing tiny images and expecting them to be enlarged without quality loss.
• Ignoring colour mode requirements, leading to inaccurate colours.

Extra Time & Cost for Fixing Poor Images
Redrawing or cleaning up a poor-quality image can take hours. Many people do not realize this, but
preparing a low-quality image for printing often requires manual work, which may incur additional
costs. Providing proper files saves time and money. We have access to thousands of print ready designs, many which you can add you prsonal touches like names and dates etc

Tips for Best Results
• Use original artwork or high-resolution files whenever possible.
• Provide vector files for logos and text-based designs.
• Double-check resolution and color mode before submitting.
• Remove unwanted backgrounds or request transparency.
• Communicate with your printer for any special requirements.
